City Beautiful - Chandigarh

Chandigarh is a city and a union territory in the northern part of India that assists as the capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh originates its name from the temple of "Chandi Mandir" located in the neighbourhood of the site selected for the city. The divinity 'Chandi', the goddess of power and a fort of 'garh' laying beyond the temple gave the city its name "Chandigarh-The City Beautiful". As a union territory, the city is governed directly by the Union Government of India and is not part of either state.

About Chandigarh


This city was prophesied by Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and objectified by Le Corbusier. Serenity and a city are two diametrically opposite concepts, which however, get belied in the 'City Beautiful' the young-at-heart, fast growing and progressive city is stunning for its urban planning, impressive buildings with brise-soleil facades, well-organized sectors and broad tree-lined avenues.

Geographically, Chandigarh is located near the hills of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas in northwest India. The area is exhausted by two seasonal rivulets viz. Sukhna Choe in the east and Patiala-Ki-Rao Choe in the west. The central part observes a surface water divide and has 2 minor streams.
